Training for Organising and Teaching Workshops

Both in New Zealand and internationally, KIDPOWER TEENPOWER FULLPOWER (shortened to KIDPOWER) is looking for people who are interested in working with our organisation to help organise and teach workshops. Our goal is to provide high quality training to everyone, especially those most at risk of assault, violence and abuse.

Assistant Instructors, Instructors and Organizers play an essential role by helping to bring KIDPOWER services to their communities. These services include KIDPOWER for children and their adults, TEENPOWER for teens, FULLPOWER for adults, SENIORPOWER for older people, WORKPOWER for workplace personal safety, ADAPTED PROGRAMMES for people of all ages facing difficult life challenges, TEACHERPOWER for school and classroom peer aggression management, PARENTPOWER for parents needing help with boundary-setting skills, and UNIVERSITYPOWER for young people who are leaving home to go to university.

The first step is to call us on 0800 543 769 and to talk to our New Zealand Director Cornelia Baumgartner. Discuss with her what you are interested in and what questions you have. She will send you an information package and guide you through the process.

People who are not from New Zealand are encouraged to contact KIDPOWER TEENPOWER FULLPOWER International directly for information about instructor training and other options for bringing services to their community.

REGISTRATION, FEES and LOGISTICS:

REGISTRATION

Interested instructor candidates can request an information package. Before participating in any training programme, Assistant Instructor or Instructor candidates need to have been screened, approved and to have signed a training agreement. Please contact us for more information at newzealand@kidpower.org or phone 0800 543 769.

FEES and LOGISTICS

We heavily subsidise fees for individuals who are making a long-term commitment to our organisation by working under the auspices of the New Zealand Centre. Becoming part of our organisation has both ongoing benefits and requirements that are described below.

Please talk to us if the fees are keeping you from training as an Assistant Instructor or an Instructor. Individuals can often obtain donations and grants. We will be happy to arrange a payment plan that suits your situation (i.e. time payments, work exchange, etc.) and may be able to help you access funding.

LOCAL QUALIFICATION as an Assistant Instructor: We offer local training in either the KIDPOWER and/or the TEENPOWER/FULLPOWER curriculum for NZ $1,000 each to individuals who make a long-term commitment to work with our Trust. Successful local training leads to local qualification as Assistant Instructor in the selected programme(s) so that you can co-teach workshop with an experienced Instructor. After working as an Assistant Instructor, you can make a plan to go to California for international certification as a full Instructor as described below.

Once you have accreditation for one programme, training times and fees for the other programme can be reduced depending on the additional individual training needed.

INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION as a full Instructor: Another option is to receive screening, pre-training preparation, and post-training follow-up by the New Zealand Centre for a nominal fee of NZ $150 per training and directly participate in the international Comprehensive Programme Training for KIDPOWER and/or TEENPOWER/FULLPOWER in California at a highly subsidised rate of approximately NZ $1,200 for each training (US $750 for the training plus US $95 for the training materials) You will also need to plan to cover your travel, local transportation, and housing costs during the training. International Certification as a full Instructor for each type of programme leads to authorisation to lead workshops under the supervision of the New Zealand Director. If you are going to participate in this programme, you will need to have gone through the screening and preparation process well in advance of the training itself. Also, if you are participating in the KIDPOWER Comprehensive Programme Training, you will need to have taken a FULLPOWER Workshop for adults either in New Zealand or to plan to do this in California the day before the training.

FULL FORCE PADDED SUIT: Padded equipment meeting our safety specifications is necessary for people who wish to be Padded Instructors for teaching Full Force self defence. The cost for the whole suit and bag is about NZ $2,300. We can discuss funding options with you and arrange the ordering of the equipment. If you are going to be fitted for the padded full force suit, this suit must be ordered well in advance and you must have an appointment for suit fitting the day before the training programme starts.

COACH INSTRUCTOR EQUIPMENT: Coach Instructors need a basic set of equipment including two kick pads (about NZ $80 each), two focus mittens (about NZ $60 each), a tape deck and a first aid kit. This can be obtained after the training.

COMMENTS FROM PARTICIPANTS:

"The training programme taught me so much about myself and about how to work with people effectively. It is deeply rewarding to see how a few hours of my time can literally change someone's life."

“It is an amazing experience to know that I help people feel empowered!”

“This work is challenging, yet very rewarding. I learn a lot about myself from the work and I witness incredible amounts of healing and courage with the students and fellow workshop team members, which in turn has inspired me in other areas of my life.”

WHY BECOME PART OF OUR ORGANISATION?

Our vision is to create an international community of programme leaders, teaching staff, and volunteers who will work together to make high quality training available to as many people as possible. Being part of our organisation not only means that you will be able to teach important safety skills to people in your community, but also that you will be part of a professional, committed and supportive international community of leaders who are dedicated to making high quality self-protection and confidence building programmes widely accessible.

You will also have access to a large pool of knowledge and experience in the form of our board of directors, executive director, assistant directors, centre directors, programme leaders and experienced instructors.

“The wonderful thing about this organisation is that it ‘walks its talk’. The values of the organisation are not just words on a piece of paper - everybody actually works really, really hard to uphold them on an organisational and inter-personal level.”

The HOW of what we do is as important to us as WHAT we do, not only with students but with everyone who is part of our organisation. Therefore, we are committed to our organisation being an honest community and see our work at all levels as being in a constant state of evolution. We work hard to have fair and clear agreements and standards and to uphold them. We are a supportive community in which people are encouraged to do what works well in their lives.

One of our most important values is that we have a safe organisation. This means we do our best to ensure the physical and emotional safety of people at all levels of our organisation and pro-actively identify and act on problems as soon as possible and anticipate and plan for new challenges.

We think it is crucial to work as a team with each other, with our students, and with other concerned people to bring the best services possible to the most people possible, and welcome people of any age, culture, religion, race, gender, political belief, sexual orientation and identity, marital status, physical or emotional disability, or income who share our vision and goals and can join us in upholding these values.
